Govt assures MPs no wealth tax on agricultural land

Bhupinder Singh Hooda told media that FM would make a statement in Parliament

Worried over the imposition of Wealth Tax on ‘agricultural land’ within eight kms aerial distance of municipal limits, as proposed by the Union budget, a delegation of Congress MPs from Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Delhi and Orissa alongwith Haryana Chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda met Finance Minister P Chidambaram today who has assured them that “there will be no wealth tax on agricultural land.”

Hooda later told reporters that the FM would be making a statement on the floor of the Parliament in this regard.

Meanwhile, senior BJP leader and Chairman of the Standing Committee on Finance Yashwant Sinha has also written to the FM urging him to “undo this wrong done to the agriculturalists.”

The insertion of this new clause in the Union budget redefining urban land for computation of wealth tax had led to widespread discontent among farmers; an issue that the ruling SAD government in Punjab has been quick to latch on.

The SAD argued that this clause would adversely affect Punjab farmers more than other states in the country, as more than 70% of the state's total agricultural land is within eight kms from the outer limits of municipal bodies. The Punjab CM has written to the Prime Minister urging that it be retracted while the SAD has announced statewide ‘dharnas’ on May 2.

Mohinder Singh Kaypee Punjab MP speaking to Buisness Standard said, “The FM has assured that there will be no wealth tax on agricultural land whether in an urban area or rural area.”

This “positive action” would come as a huge relief to Congress workers in states as this tax was being viewed as an anti-farmer move by the government. Punjab MPs who were the present in large number including Union ministers Manish Tewari and Preneet Kaur, were worried about the public sentiment that was being whipped up by SAD, at a time when the Congress in the state was attempting to consolidate its position in the state.

Partap Singh Bajwa speaking to Business Standard earlier said, “We need an urgent clarification as the Akali government is misleading the public against the Congress led UPA claiming that the government has signed their death warrant. We obviously first addressed our concerns to our Party president and then took it to the FM.”

The issue has assumed greater importance in Punjab after reports of the IT department preparing notices for imposition of this tax. The MPs therefore requested the FM to issue administrative directions to the IT to hold on issuance of fresh notices seeking payment of wealth tax on agricultural land.
